Kerri Pomarolli: Interview

By Dina Di Maio

You call yourself a "good Christian girl" and a "clean" comic.  That's definitely unique in the world of comedy these days.  I don't think I've heard of a clean comic--at least not since George Carlin arrived on the scene.  Most comedy seems to be sexual or raunchy.  One of my favorite TV shows was The Honeymooners because it was clean and always funny.  How do you convince people today that clean comedy is funny?

You can't convince an audience of anything...they either laugh or they don't. When I come on stage I don't announce whether I'm clean or not. I just do my thing and if they laugh then I'm doing my job. I don't go dirty in the way I talk off stage so I don't do it onstage. Some of my favorite comics are clean....Seinfeld....Ellen....etc. You don't have to be dirty to make people laugh. I think it's about connecting with an audience and hitting them where they live. If they can relate to me then I have a better chance of being really funny to them.

How has growing up in a Christian and Italian household influenced your comedy?

Well I grew up with the basic Christian values...guilt and intimidation! j/k But basically because I had a Catholic upbringing I knew if I did anything too bad I'd go to hell! Now I can say that onstage and many many people felt the same way and laugh. I talk about my mother trying to make me into a "good southern belle and failing miserably. I talk about my dad who did crazy stuff like tell waitresses our family was in the witness protection program. My comedy all comes from truth as crazy as it sounds.

You have an impressive background in acting, having studied at Stella Adler in NYC and the British Drama Academy in London, how did you get into comedy?

I knew I wanted to perform since I was little. I grew up telling jokes from the time I was 2 years old and my parents brainwashed me with material. I'd say when I was 2" Hey I met this guy on the street and he had a banana in his ear. I said "Hey You have a banana in your ear. He said "I can't hear you ...you I have a banana in my ear" and on it went. I never thought I'd do stand up in a million years. I actually was asked and I said I'd rather stand on my head naked and sing the pledge of allegiance. But things change and God had different plans for me. I was doing well with my Hollywood pursuits but wasn't feeling like it was all I thought it would be. I wanted more out of my career but I didn't know what. I did things my way when I moved to LA and I wasn't even that religious so I wasn't exactly asking God's opinion about things. I just wanted Mom to have stuff to brag about at bridge club. But then as I got into my mid 20's and started actually talking to God about my life choices including my career. I know that comedy was something I was supposed to do. I was supposed to go out to bars and clubs and be that "Christian Chick" and actually talk about it and make people laugh. I wanted to break down some stereo types about religion and also just be clean. I was terrified at first and I still am to be doing this but it's been a wonderful wild ride.

Jay Leno obviously knows what it's like to be in the comedy trenches, and he seems supportive of young comedians.  What is it like working with him at The Tonight Show?

Well he has been nothing but kind and personable. I never told him I was doing stand up until recently and when he found out he was so encouraging to me. I 've been doing sketches with him for the past 5 years and he's just a fun down to earth peanut butter and jelly kind of guy...except that he owns about a million cars!

Your act includes your search for Mr. Right.  What do you look for in a man and why do you think he's so hard to find?

At this point someone who speaks English! No really it's hard to say...ask any single woman what she wants and you'll get 5 minutes of rambling and end up with a cross between Brad Pitt and Matt Damon. I think when you meet Mr Right you just know.....now wait I think I've said that about the last 8 guys I dated so don't ask me! Where is he? If I knew I'd be on Orphan right now selling my book. Well actually I did write a book and it's coming out in July. "If I'm Waiting ON God Then What Am I doing on the Christian Chatroom" It's not for religious people it's just about my journey for my Prince Charming. It's comical stories about all the dumb things we women do to get men...pretending to like dogs...changing everything about us...hitting on the guys at Costco. I was sick of dating books that weren't real. I wanted to share my real and yes horrifying stories so other women knew they weren't alone in this battle! It was written from the trenches for sure.

As I mentioned, you are also an actor and a writer.  What upcoming projects are you working on?

I just finished a CD called Comedy without Compromise and it's such an honor to be on it with these three other comedians. It's all clean comedy with Sherri Shepherd from ABC "s less than Perfect and Everybody loves Raymond...Comedian Bone and Ron McGehee. They are amazing and it's a compilation project. There will also be a DVD coming out sometime in 04. These and my book are available on www.kerripom.com. I think there will be another book coming out in early fall as well. Right now I'm doing a lot of traveling opening for some great comics like Sherri and Bone and also headlining myself.

If you'd like a CD of Kerri's comedy, see her site at www.kerripom.com.
